The Academic Underclass: Lecturer and Grad Student Labor in the UCs
TO BE RECORDED
Facilitators: Trevor Griffey and Erica Fletcher
Description: This teach-in will discuss the shared struggles of graduate students and lecturers, with an emphasis on the ways in which lecturers collectively serve as an essential part of UC teaching labor but are treated as individually disposable, with the majority earning poverty wages and ineligible for health benefits. We will share stories of our disposability and demoralization that are cooked into the UC system, and provide updates on recent efforts at UC-AFT to strengthen inter and intra-campus union coalitions and build solidarity between grad students and lecturers.
Facilitator bios: Trevor Griffey, PhD is a Lecturer in Labor Studies at UCLA and in U.S. History at UC Irvine.
Erica Hua Fletcher, PhD is a Lecturer in Anthropology at UC Irvine.
