COLA Futures: Changing the Culture of Higher Education

Bio: Facilitated by Bobby Edwards (UCSD), a fourth year graduate student in the History Department at UCSD. As an inter-disciplinary researcher, he studies the colonial history of American anthropology and Native American political history, with attention to theories of language, culture, and psychology.

Description: This workshop will reflect on the current organizational structure of the COLA movement, outlining cross-sector alliances and inter-campus networks vis a vis the power structures of the UC institution. Discussion will focus on developing the synthesis of education reform (occupy movement) and labor reform (cost of living adjustment). What is the trajectory of the UCs political economy and what does this mean for higher ed? How are the UCs situated in the broader global economy? How does the COLA movement speak to alternative political futures?
